CURRENT SITUATION

The integration process will include four phases. Currently under way, the first phase corresponds to the definition of the Flash gesture database to allow the development of a word assembly line. Also under way, the second phase comprises the development of an image for each of the 300 most used words. Already completed, the third phase refers to the development of a Java word processor, called Rybena, which translates Portuguese into LIBRAS. The fourth stage, also under way, corresponds to the development of a voice recognition and synthesizing module as the main module for user interaction. To simplify matters, the team decided not to use LIBRAS animations in the tests but a simplified version called Signalized Portuguese. This version represents the Portuguese language in signs, word by word, unlike LIBRAS, where a phrase may be represented by only one sign. The system is being developed in Borland's JBuilder Mobile version, due to its capacity to emulate Sony Ericsson’s P800 cell phone, and modeled with IBM Rational Rose. This is a third-generation device defined as the development platform for this project. Such device was selected because it supports Mpeg-4 images and runs Java J2ME applications in Symbian operational environment.
